ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
Anyone can make a playlist. A DJ turns music into an experience.
If you love discovering and sharing music but have never taken control of the decks, DJ Starter will take you from playlist to your first live set.
Across two hands-on sessions, DJ and music curator Leonard Tan will guide you through equipment, mixing, music selection, energy and reading the room. Between sessions, you will curate a 15-track party playlist before returning to perform and record your set.
AI can recommend songs and automate transitions. A DJ understands the occasion, responds to the room and makes creative decisions in the moment.
You will leave with practical DJ foundations, a recorded first set and personalised feedback.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
Session 1: From Playlist to DJ Set
Understand the DJ equipment, beats, bars, phrases and song structure. Learn basic cueing, mixing and transitions while exploring how music selection shapes the energy of a party.
Session 2: Your First House Party Set
Refine your transitions, learn how to read the room and respond to your audience, then perform your first short DJ set in a supportive party setting. Receive personalised feedback from Leonard and leave with a recording of your performance.
Between Sessions: Build Your Set
Curate a 15-track party playlist and prepare your set during the week between sessions.
Every part of the programme leads towards your first performance.
The party set itself becomes the classroom.
MENTOR
DJ LeonardT
Leonard Tan, known professionally as DJ LeonardT, has more than 30 years of experience across Singapore’s music and entertainment scene. A pioneering force behind early electronic dance acts Club Ecstasy and The Usual Suspects, he has also written and produced award-winning songs with artists including Dick Lee, Anita Sarawak, Chris Ho, Jamie Yeo and Maia Lee.
As an open-format DJ, Leonard is known for reading the room and moving instinctively between mainstream, underground, retro and contemporary music. His experience spans club residencies, commercial and private events, the 2025 New Year’s Eve Countdown and National Day Parade 2026.
In DJ Starter, Leonard goes beyond teaching controls and transitions. He helps participants understand what to play, when to play it and how to turn individual songs into an experience that connects with the room.
